Requirements Summary

ILR Requirements:find out more

  • In each rolling 12-month period within BN(O) Visa, you must spend no more than 180 days outside the UK.
    • Rolling means any continuous 12-month window, not calendar years
    • Examples: Jun 2023–May 2024, Jul 2023–Jun 2024, Aug 2023–Jul 2024

Citizenship Requirements:find out more

  • Last 5 Years' Absence: No more than 450 days
  • Last 12 Months' Absence: No more than 90 days
  • ILR status: Must hold for at least 12 months
  • Physical presence: Must have been in the UK exactly 5 Years before your application date

How Absence Requirements are Calculated:

All absence calculations are based on your Estimated Citizenship Application Date. While this date is initially set to your earliest eligibility date, you can choose to apply later if needed. The initial date is determined as:

  • If you only have BN(O): 5+1 years after your BN(O) start date
  • If you have ILR: 1 year after your ILR grant date
  • You can choose a later date using the date picker if you need more time to meet the absence requirements

The absence requirements are then calculated backwards from your chosen application date, not from when you first become eligible:

  • Last 5 Years' Absence: Total days absent in the 5 Years before your application date (max 450 days)
  • Last 12 Months' Absence: Total days absent in the 12 months before your application date (max 90 days)

Full-Day Rule:

Only days when you're entirely outside the UK are counted as absent days.

Examples:

  • Leave Jan 1st, return Jan 1st (same day): 0 days absent
  • Leave Jan 1st, return Jan 2nd: 0 days absent (no full days outside)
  • Leave Jan 1st, return Jan 3rd: 1 day absent (Jan 2nd is full day outside)
  • Leave Jan 1st, return Jan 4th: 2 days absent (Jan 2nd and 3rd are full days outside)
